Perfect. They were distracted. His advance would be easy. Still he must be careful; he was too close to screw up now.

From behind the mausoleum Ned Thomas lumbered toward the empty section. He stepped from behind a tree and waited, staring at the two of them.

Harry Corbin looked up quickly. “Ned, what are you doing here?”

He clicked the safety on his pistol knowing it would stop Harry where he sat. “Get up. Where is it?”

“Where’s what, Ned? What the hell are you doing?”

“Shut up with the questions! Give me the book.”

Ned looked at Angela. She was shoving it behind her back into her jeans.

Harry had his arms out, in part to protect Angela and in readiness to defend himself. He began to back away slowly, to create any amount of distance between the Chief and themselves. Over his shoulder he whispered, “Angela, get ready to run. Go down around the fence to your Grandma’s yard. I’ll be right behind you. Ready?”

She nodded. Her muscles tightened, her mind already following the route out of the cemetery.
